Reflection on the Mistreatment of an Indian Journalist in the US: A Serious Challenge to Democracy and Constitutional Values |
The recent incident involving Indian journalist Rohit Sharma in the United States has raised serious concerns about democracy and press freedom. According to Rohit Sharma, when he asked Rahul Gandhi a simple question, "Will you also speak about Bangladeshi Hindus in the US?", the supporters present became furious. They reportedly locked him in a room for three hours, confiscated his phone, deleted videos, and even mistreated him. This incident is not just an attack on Indian journalism but a blow to the very foundations of democratic values.
In a democracy, everyone has the right to ask questions, especially journalists whose job is to bring the truth to light. Rohit Sharma’s question was sensitive yet valid, and there was nothing inappropriate about it. Yet, the response he received was troubling, raising significant concerns about the state of free expression.
This incident brings several important issues to the forefront. First, is this the same constitution that we proudly uphold, where freedom of expression is supposed to be respected? If such a reaction is met for asking a question, it reflects poorly on the strength of our democracy. It is disgraceful for an Indian citizen to face such mistreatment on foreign soil.
Second, why are the supporters of political leaders, who are expected to work in the nation's interest, displaying such intolerance? This event also highlights the growing lack of dialogue between differing ideologies and political beliefs.
Journalism is the fourth pillar of democracy, and when it is suppressed or attacked, the entire system's stability is at risk. Protecting the freedom of the press is the responsibility of every nation, be it India or the United States.
This incident should prompt deep reflection from everyone. Democracy is not just about winning elections or running governments; it is about safeguarding the rights and dignity of every citizen.
